As a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I know what it means to train hard and make sacrifices while working to find balance. As a PhD in educational psychology, I know how individuals set goals and make choices that bring them closer to (or farther away from) these goals. As a life coach-in-training, I know how to help athletes and coaches identify their needs, harness their strengths and pursue fulfilling lives.
Different athletes are drawn to different sports. Even people who pursue the same sport may focus on different aspects of it. The ideal balance of activity, relationships, and responsibilities for a fulfilling life will also differ from person to person. Striking this balance, making sure all parts of our lives are in harmony, is as important to our goals as actually practicing our sport.
Whether we pursue athletics, a high-powered career, improvement in the quality of our relationships, or some combination, we are influenced by our definitions of success, fulfillment, time management, healthy relationships, and lifestyle balance. When these influences are in harmony, we feel productive and fulfilled. But when they are not, we can feel derailed, deflated, or unmotivated. Stuck.
